Pre-surgery questions(hamstring graft ACL)

by Megan

I just have a question to anyone that has already had an acl surgery using a hamstring graft...once you have recovered is there a major difference in the strength of your hamstring? or have you noticed any problems with your hamstring later on in life?

hamstring problems

Most of the literature on hamstring graft reconstructions does not show a significant difference in hamstring strength over a long term follow up. It will take some time for you to build your strength back up, but there shouldn't be any major complications down the road from where they took the graft.

what I read
by: Cathlyn

I'm awaiting my ACL surgery and going with a donor.
However, one site I was reading from a dancer said that she did well with the hamstring donation site.
She can still go 'on pointe', that it feels 'different' but everything still works well. Since dancers are extremely athletic (especially ballet dancers) I'd say that is good news.

they used my own hamstring

You are lucky to get a donor, didn't know that was an option. Perhaps only in the States. They took some of my own hamstring for the graft. Quite painful to be honest.

You will be back to normal with proper rehab. Good luck!!
