Question - Achilles Tendon Tear

by Chris
(UK)

Recently tore my achilles tendon, 3 weeks ago, although initially painful I have no pain at all now. Slight swelling but is going down now.
Saw my doctor who said "see how it feels in a few weeks...."

I am able to walk okay but can not go up on the ball of my foot yet.

If I left it to heal on it's own will it be okay?
Thanks

How bad was the tear?
by: Bart - SII

Depending on the severity of your tear, you might be able to go with conservative treatment and be alright. If it was a complete tear, or more than 1/2 of the tendon, then surgical intervention is probably your best choice of treatment.

The achilles tendon is on an almost constant state of stretch, and is used with any type of weight bearing exercise - this means that the torn ends are not easily healed because of the constant tension. Most of the time, surgery for a complete rupture is attempted within the first week after injury.

Did you see an orthopedic physician, or a general practice physician? I would recommend a consult with an orthopedist if you haven't yet, as well as some type of rehabilitation to speed your recovery.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.
