Question - ACL (football injury - calf swelling)

My 15 year old son may have torn his ACL during a football game.I took him to a sports clinic and they told him he could walk on it and now his calf muscle is swelling up.I was wondering if that is normal or should I take him back to the Dr. The Dr. took an MRI and we wont find out the results for a couple days.

Calf swelling is normal
by: Bart - SII

while the doctor told him he can walk on it, which he can, he should probably try to avoid excessive use of the leg - the more he is up on the knee, the more swelling he will have initially. So, no extra long walks around the mall or standing all night at a football game. Normal activities but rest as much as possible.

The calf swelling is from the internal swelling at the knee being pulled down into the calf by gravity - the more he is up on his feet, the more swelling will be pulled down.

You can also try an elastic wrap around the calf and up to the knee to provide some compression and help control the swelling.

Blood clots & ACL
by: Anonymous

If the calf gets painful in certain places, please have it check for blood clots. I got blood clots after a ACL tear.
