Can you use a patella allograft for an active 15 year old high school player in football and baseball? What are the advantages and disadvantages? What type of graft do most athletes in high school and college tend to use?

Most high school and college athletes end up using an autograft - either the patellar tendon or hamstring. The patellar tendon autograft is considered the gold standard for ACL reconstructions.

It is possible to use an allograft for high school athletes, but there is a higher risk of graft failure and possibly a weaker tensile strength of the graft over time compared to the autograft.

There have been a lot of advances recently - I have seen some young athletes with allografts do very well.

Many times it comes down to your surgeons philosophy as to what graft they use in different patient populations.

Disadvantages include graft failure, infection, weaker strength

Advantages include less post-op pain, a quicker recovery initially with motion and strength, and no disruption to your patellar tendon.
