Question - ACL Surgery

by Elisabeth Smith

ok. so i had surgery thursday to repair the meniscus in my left knee. once the doc got in there he realized that i also had a torn ACL and it has attached itself to another ligament. i wrecked my dirt bike a year ago and thats how the injury happened.

Can you give me any idea about what to expect during and after surgery? will the length of time since my injury have any effect at all? how long does the acl reconstruction surgery last? is this a normal situation...the acl ligament growing to another ligament??

thanks, Elisabeth Smith

p.s. i am clueless and scared any information will be greatly appreciated!!!

ACL surgery

Because your injury was over a year ago, you likely tore your ACL at that time, and during the healing process, the ACL scarred into the PCL(the closest ligament inside the knee).

So, with an ACL reconstruction the surgery usually lasts an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the surgeon...sometimes a little longer. The recovery takes about 6-9 months before returning to activities, quite a bit of rehabilitation and strengthening during that time.

There is a lot of information throughout this site on ACL reconstructions, and lots of stories from other visitors who have gone through the process.
