Question - ACL Tear (cast, crutches, or brace?)

by Bree
(Westville, Ok)

I'm only 14 and i tore my ACL in a soccer game...I'm getting a MRI later in the month. But the question is will I have to wear a hard cast, brace or crutches. Even though it is the least thing to think about, I still would like to know because I will get a little embarressed for wearing crutches to school.

Before or after surgery?
by: Bart - SII

You may have to have a brace and use crutches for a few days or a week after you injury but not usually for longer than that. If you have surgery, that is a little different.

Every doctor is a little different when it comes to a brace or crutches after surgery. Many will have you wear a brace for a few weeks and use crutches for 2-3 weeks while you get your strength back to be able to walk. You probably will have to have crutches for at least a little while after surgery.

I know you think it is embarassing, but think of all of the special things you can have if you have crutches at school - extra time to get to your classes - people will help carry your books - you might get an elevator pass so you don't have to use the stairs - and you can even get a handicap sticker so you get the best parking spots (wait, you aren't old enough to drive, are you) I know it sounds bad, but it will only be for a very short time - and then you will be back to walking.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.

Bart :-)
