Question - ACL Torn

by Kristian

The MRI shows I completely tore my ACL. I cannot fully extend my leg or bend over 90 degree... If I am not choosing surgery, does that mean my leg will never be fully extended or bend over 90 degrees?

I've been waiting to see a specialist for over 1 month. Is that I should get my surgery done as soon as I can?

Thanks
Kristian

Surgery should help
by: Bart - SII

It is possible to survive life without an ACL. It is hard to participate in sports without it, but daily activities can be pain free for some people.

The fact that your injury occurred over a month ago and you still cannot fully extend your knee or bend past 90 degrees could be from swelling, but is most likely due to the torn ACL being in the way of the joint or other pathology inside the knee like a meniscus tear.

Surgery is probably a good idea, if nothing else just to clean up the damaged tissues and remove anything that is torn. This can be done without reconstructing the ACL.

Once you get in to see the specialist, they can answer all of your questions and give you their recommendations. In the mean time, you should follow the R.I.C.E. Principles and working on gentle range of motion exercises.

Hope this helps...hang in there until you get in to your doctor.
