Question - Ankle Fusion

I had an ankle fusion 15 years ago and have been having different pain for the past few months. The pain is severe and I have difficulty walking. This usually occurs after a round of golf or standing for long periods.

I am a 52 year old female, approximately 200 lbs and very active. I swim 120 laps daily and golf 2 or 3 times a week, walking the course. Presently I am icing the ankle 20 minutes every 2 hours and resting. My question is would seeing a sports medicine specialist help in any way?

Sorry for the delay in answering...

I think that seeing a sports med professional would be of benefit for you. If nothing else, they should be able to give you some ideas of how to lessen your pain with activities, either with modifications to your sports, or with orthotics, bracing, etc. Best case scenario, you go through a bit of rehab for some strengthening / balance, surround joint mobility and you solve your problem.

Obviously with the ankle fusion, the mechanics of your foot is not going to be normal, but an evaluation of the surrounding joints and how they are working could be of benefit.
