Question - Ankle sprain ( continued swelling)

by Rama Ananth
(India)

I had an ankle sprain some months back, since it was mild it did not bother me much to see a doctor, but one day due to probably my overuse of it ( I am an Aerobics Instructor), I suddenly felt a lot of pain and had to consult a doctor.

X-rays showed everything was alright, so i had to go through MRI, which pointed out to some damage to the tissues/ tendon or something like that.

Anyway i took complete rest, and continued with the Rice and after a while i went to a physiotherapist. She gave me ultrasonic treatment (TENS), and some exercises, I took it for around 10 to 12 days, and stopped for I was slowly able to do everything as before and of course i continued with physiotherapy exercises at home with hot water with salt etc. I also use Arnica joint pain oil regularly.

Now I have recovered, but still the swelling is not gone, the swelling is the same amount it was, though the pain is not there. What should I do to get rid of the swelling. The doctor however said I should not bother as the swelling has come to stay there because I neglected it in the intial stage when I first felt I had a sprain. Is it true ?

I have noticed no amount of ice also helps in bring down the swelling, what should do?

Please answer me as i am worried, though not in pain.

Some swelling is normal

Continued swelling after an ankle sprain is common - for several months to years after the injury. If it is not causing pain, is not inhibiting your activities, and does not significantly increase with activities, it is probably of little concern.

Ice, compression, and soft tissue massage are the best ways to try to reduce the swelling.
