Question - Ankle Sprain (getting back to basketball)

Hi. I sprained my ankle 2 and a half months ago in June and nothing came up in the x-ray although the doctor told me it was just as bad as a fracture. Anyways I've been using ice on it since then and after a while I've been seeing very little to no improvement on the swelling. Yes there is still some swelling left and it just won't leave.

I sprained it playing basketball and about a month ago I returned to the sport. I have been feeling less pain every week but now it has really slowed down. I wear an ACE bandage when I play. When I tap both sides of my ankle with my knuckles it hurts.

Cut the small talk...

My basketball season starts in the 1st week of October but i have tryouts in the 1st week of September. I wanna be ready for that but right now it seems unlikely. Due to this sprain my conditioning isn't where it was or should be and more importantly I am very slow now, running and jumping, turns, reaction.

Can your program for ankle sprains help me? Also I have two questions: when do i stop using ice? and I've heard that I should heat it like in hot water with salt or something, will this be helpful?

Rehab would help...
by: Bart - SII

The swelling in your ankle may stick around for months - that is pretty normal after an ankle sprain. But, as long as it is only a small amount, it shouldn't affect your ability to go back to basketball.

Did you do any type of rehab after your injury, other than use ice? If not, that is probably why are are still having problems 2 months later. Exercises to improve your balance, strength, muscle control, etc. are essential for a full recovery. If you did go through rehab with an athletic trainer or physical therapist, they are probably your best source for getting you back to basketball shape.

The Ankle Sprain Solutions program would be of benefit to you, as it covers all of the things you should be doing after an ankle sprain. Of the most benefit would be the exercises, as well as the progression for returning to play.

Keep us posted on how you do, and feel free to comment back with other questions.
