Question - Ankle Sprain (Return to Hockey)

by Shu
(New York, NY, USA)

I had a sprain in my ankle approximately 2 weeks ago. I was far from home with no access to a car, so I had to walk on it and the swelling became quite aggravated.

Once home I spent a day on crutches and then started to rehab. It's been two weeks and all of the swelling has not subsided although it looks quite a bit better. I can also stand on one foot, do light side to side exercises, bike and all else.

I am meant to play in a hockey league in about two weeks. Is it too early to try and get in shape, or can I start to push on the ankle to manage?

Exercises for strength and balance
by: Bart - SII

Let pain be your guide, and start working on some strengthening and balance exercises. Ankle sprains are usually over looked when it comes to recovery - we try to go back too fast too soon because we don't feel like the injury is significant - however that often leads to recurrent sprains and instability, pain, and dysfunction.

Thanks

Thanks bart... the last week of rehab for the ankle has been very good. Pain being a monitor for progress, it feels pretty good to go. Thanks for taking the time to post the helpful feedback.
