Question - Ankle Sprain/Muscle strain

by Margie
(Torrance, CA)

Four weeks ago I sprained my ankle (lateral), in this injury it appears that I tore ligaments and suffered some muscle strain too. I did see my doctor and he assures me that this would all heal on it's own within 6 weeks, even though I still have 2 weeks left before the 6 week mark of my injury I still do not feel any progress in it's healing, in the last couple of weeks I have begun feeling pain going up my calf and shin and I experience some sharp pains in the bottom of my foot and heal.

Is this normal? or should I seek a second opinion?

I would talk to your doctor about a rehabilitation for your ankle. It is true that it will heal on its own, but that is a slow and frustrating process and the ankle will never really be the same without some type of rehab program.

The pains you are feeling are actually normal for an ankle sprain without rehab focusing on muscle function. Your muscles and joints have basically forgotten how to work correctly together, which ultimately causes added stress on the area.

If your doctor is unwilling to give you a referral to rehab, you would benefit from Ankle Sprain Solutions which provides a comprehensive strengthening and balance exercise program for the ankle.
