Question - Ankle Swelling (causes and treatment)

I am 14 years old and started football practice two weeks ago. Both my ankles are swelling on the outside and hurting really bad. What would cause this and what can I do correct it?

Your sudden increase in activity, coupled with the fact that you are playing in football cleats which have no padding or arch support, and possibly ankle weakness can all contribute to ankle swelling and pain.

You may want to talk to your athletic trainer (or you family doctor) for some exercises to work on ankle strengthening - you can also find some information on this site. You can add an insert into your cleats to provide a little more padding and arch support, which may also help with your ankle pain. As your body gets used to practicing again, this should get better, but if it doesn't, get in to see your doctor.
