Question - Broken ankle (risk of thrombosis with flying)

by Rosalind
(Gloucester)

I broke my ankle 5 weeks 3 days ago. Straight forward break. Have had leg plaster taken off at Hospital today. Still quite swollen, etc. Was due to go on holiday on Sunday 20 July flying to Spain. Was told not to go because of possibility of blood clot/deep vein thrombosis.

Do you agree please ?

Rosalind, sorry for not getting to your question quicker. I hope you are on holiday right now as I answer this.

The possibility of thrombosis with flying is true, but is usually much more prevalent with acute injuries. Since you had your fracture several weeks ago, I would be inclined to go ahead with the holiday. You can work on range of motion exercises - pumping your foot up and down, which will keep the blood circulating and help with prevention.

Ultimately this would be a decision you would have to make on your own.

Again, sorry for the delay...

Bart
