Question - Collar Bone

My son is 17 and he broke his first collar bone 1 1/2 yrs ago snowboarding, then again in the following summer biking and now again snowboarding. He's 6ft 2" and I swear he grew a foot in a year. I give him all kinds of bone building supplements to help.

Should he stay away from these type of sports for at least a year? If his bones are this weak could this lead to maybe breaking his neck or back?

The collar bone, or clavicle, is a fairly frequently fractured bone, especially with falls like snowboarding or biking. Did he fracture the same one, or both right and left?

Once fractured, the bone may be weakened due to poor healing, or simply because they broken area is still remodeling itself. Most bones will continue to get stronger for up to a year after injury, and this may be part of the problem if he has suffered repeat breaks to the same bone. It may be a good idea to limit dangerous activities for a few months.

Bone supplements may help, but a good diet of calcium rich foods is equally important. While he has suffered 3 fractures of the clavicle, this does not necessarily indicate he is likely to suffer neck or back injury. The clavicle is much more likely to be broken than the neck or back.

I would recommend talking with your doctor about your concerns.
