Question - Dislocation of the Shoulder

by Andrew Thomas
(Dayton, NV :U.S.A)

I am doing a research project for my High School Sports Physiology class. I can't find out information on how to prevent dislocation of the shoulder and other ways to heal it.

Can you please help me figure it out.

Thank you so much.

Strengthening is one way...
by: Bart - SII

Thats a great question Andrew. Preventing shoulder dislocation can be aided by strengthening of the shoulder muscles. While most dislocations in sports occur with some type of forceful pulling of the shoulder, if the shoulder muscles are strong, it is less likely to dislocate.

Strengthening of the rotator cuff, scapular stabilizers, and also the trunk and abdominal muscles can all help to prevent shoulder dislocations.

As far as treatments, most of the time a person wears a sling and the shoulder is immobilized for several weeks after a dislocation. If it is their first dislocation, they let the shoulder heal, and then go through some rehabilitation to restore strength, stability, and endurance to the muscles.

If it is second dislocation, or third, this injury is often treated with surgery to repair the torn ligaments and capsule, and to tighten the shoulder. After surgery, a sling is worn for several weeks, and then rehabilitation for several weeks or months to get the shoulder back to normal.

You might try a Google search for "preventing shoulder dislocations" and see what that gets you as far as more information.

Hope this helps. Feel free to comment back with other questions.
