Question - Frequent Ankle Sprains (surgical options)

Since young i have frequent ankle sprain due to running. Some of the Medical history:

2000: Bad Ankle Sprain - took me 6 months to recover, with 6 months of therapy done.

2001 - fracture on the joint area, sprained when on casted - took me 1.5 years to recover, with 2 years of therapy done

2002-2008 - frequent sprain on and off when walking on the streets...

MRI, countless of x-rays done but all shows normal. But i am still suffering from ankle sprains.... therefore, i was considering a ankle surgery...

Will ankle surgery really solve the frequent ankle sprain? and how long do i need to take to completely recover after the surgery?

Surgery can help if it is your last resort...
by: Bart - SII

Ankle stabilization surgery (often called a Brostrom or modified Brostrom procedure) can be very effective in treating chronic ankle instability. However, surgery should only be considered if you have exhausted all of your options.

You said that you have done a lot of therapy for your ankle after your sprains - did you do a lot of balancing exercises during your therapy, or did you do mostly strengthening? Balancing exercises are extremely important when treating ankle sprains, and sometimes they are overlooked for strengthening exercises.

Balancing on one foot, balancing on unstable surfaces like a wobble board or pillow, balancing while rotating the hips, reaching with the arms, reaching with the legs, playing catch, etc can all help to improve the efficiency of the muscles and the stability of the ankle. This is the area of treatment that I often see overlooked with patients who have chronic ankle sprains.

So, if you haven't done a lot of balancing, try that first...surgery could help but it should be your last resort.

Hope this helps - comment back if you have other questions.

I just had the modified Brostrom procedure. I still don't know if it has helped me as I am on crutches and still cant put any weight on it until the 4th of September- I had surgery the 4th of August. I would only recommend surgery if nothing else works. and the previous person said did your therapy have balancing in it? I was so unstable that I couldn't do that at all but make sure you look into all your options.
