Question - Heat Illness (headaches after activity)

My son is an 18-year-old high level soccer player who will play two 45 minute periods with a 10-15 minute break in between.

On the hottest days he gets a headache a few hours after the game which is relieved with Tylenol. It seems to only be on the hottest days that he experiences this. Is there any prevention for the headache or is it only because of the time length in the direct sunlight (with a hot surface underneath him - artificial turf on a black rubber particle base) that he get the headaches?

He doesn't experience any muscle cramps and tries to hydrate well all of the time.

Hydration before, during, and after...
by: Bart - SII

I would first look at hydration for the reason he is having headaches after a hot practice/game. It is usually the cause for symptoms like headaches and fatigue - even though he may be trying to hydrate well, try to increase his water and or sport drink consumption before, during, and after events.

Most of the time, even when you think you are hydrating well, it isn't quite enough - try increasing water intake by 50% and see if that helps.
