Question - Hip Flexor (martial arts injury)

by Liz
(Louisville, KY)

I was injured last Saturday (my nephew is a Marine and was showing me his martial arts moves - swept my front leg out from under me while my weight was planted on my back leg, knocking me down) - the pain was intense and immediate. I happen to have a physical therapist in the family who said that rest and ice were the best solutions.

I tried getting on the treadmill on Tuesday but it didn't work so I have done nothing except normal activities since.

I'm still having a hard time getting in and out of the car, into bed, into the tub and up stairs. The pain when I do those things is in both the hip and the quad. It not only hurts when I do those things but there is a constant ache in the hip. Shouldn't the pain be easing by now?

Thank you,

Liz

gentle stretching may help

From what you describe, it does sound like you could have a hip flexor injury. However, the aching pain in the hip makes me wonder if there could be something else going on. You might want to see your doctor just to be on the safe side.

Rest and ice are a good idea, as well as gentle stretching which might alleviate some of your pain.

Make sure that you gradually get back into activities - nothing too rapid or intense to start with. And if this does not continue to improve over the next few days, get in to see your doctor or have your family PT evaluate you to make sure that there is nothing more serious going on.
