Question - Hip Injury (tennis)

I'm a 45 year old male in very good physical condition. About 6 weeks ago I was playing tennis and was walking to retrieve a ball. I took a step to the left and all of a sudden felt a severe pain on the outside of my left hip (you describe the area as greater trochanter). For the first week it was severe and I couldn't do anything. After a while the pain subsided a bit but quick power moves in any direction would cause severe pain in that area and presumably a setback in healing. Presently, i still feel the injury and have been very careful to not do anything that requires making power moves. Pain is often elevated pain i'm lying on my right side with my legs straight and there is a pulling on that outside part of the hip or if i'm lying on my left side the pain is from pressure on my hip from the mat.

Please let me know what you think. I haven't seen a doctor or a PT yet, but the slowness of the healing process is concerning to me.

I would see a doctor

What you describe sounds like it could be an IT band strain, an abductor strain, bursitis, or any other number of things - the best bet is to see your doctor or a therapist, especially since you feel like you aren't getting much better with just rest and time.
