Question - Hip Pain

by Rich
(Marlboro,NJ)

My nephew is 13 years old and very active in sports, especially baseball. He also has been roller blading a lot lately.

He is experiencing pain in his right hip. X-rays show no damage to the hip but the doctor believes the problem is in his knee. He did suffer a slight fracture on his shin bone two years ago but hasn`t had and still doesn`t have any pain in his knee.

What could be causing this pain and what would be the best treatment?

Thank You

Weakness is my first thought...
by: Bart - SII

The first thing that comes to mind is weakness of the hip muscles, especially the abductors and external rotators (outside hip muscles).

The next thought is flexibility - the hamstrings, hip flexors, and lower back. Tightness in these areas can increase the stress on the hips.

Roller blading may very well be the culprit for his pain, as you really use a lot of hip during this activity.

I would recommend talking with your physician and seeking a referral to a sports medicine facility for a good evaluation and rehabilitation. A PT or ATC can show him some good stretching exercises, as well as looking at his flexibility.

There are also several different stretches on this site that he can try and see if they make a difference.

Hope this helps - feel free to comment back if you think of other questions.
