Question - Hurt Knee (soccer injury)

by Brad
(New York)

I got hit on the inside of my right knee while kicking the socer ball - its bruised but there isn't any swelling around the knee - it hurts and i can't walk on it. x-rays are negative. should i get a MRI? I have been doing RICE on it for 3 days but its not much better. Could it be my ACL?

I would follow up

I would recommend following up with your doctor, preferably an orthopedist. It could be a bruise, or it could be something a bit more signficant like ligament or cartilage damage - better to get it looked at now than to wait too long.

Hurt Knee
by: Anonymous

My 10 year old daughter just sustained the same injury this past Saturday in a soccer tournament. It's now Monday and she can't bend her knee. A girl from the other soccer team tried to clear the ball and it hit my daughter right on the inside of her right knee. She said her knee "popped" a couple times today.
Is she too young to have ACL/knee problems?

ACL injury is not common in 10 year olds, but it can happen. If she has swelling, trouble bearing weight, or trouble bending/extending the knee, I would recommend seeing your doctor for an evaluation. While ligament damage is not common, growth plate fractures can occur and this is something that needs to be ruled out just to be safe.
