I was reading your article on jammed fingers and I was wondering if is a way to prevent it from happening, because I've been getting them pretty commonly.

Depends on the sport...
by: Bart - SII

Depending on your sport, there are several ways to try to prevent a jammed finger. If it is something like football, gloves can sometimes help with providing some support for the finger. If it is basketball or other sports that don't allow for wearing gloves, you can try simply taping the knuckles that are usually most effected. Simply putting a couple strips of tape directly around the knuckle can help provide some support.

The other thing to work on is your coordination - working on quick hand drills catching and passing can improve your coordination and make it less likely to end up with a jammed finger.

Finger tip pushups
by: Anonymous

In high school, our basketball coach had us do 15-20 finger-tip pushups each day at practice. I never jammed my finger, and times when my finger seemed like it might be jammed (when the ball hit the end of my finger) it never swelled up or hurt.

Finger-tip pushups are done by assuming the pushup position but on the tips of your flexed fingers---all ten of them, instead of a flattened palm. Then do a regular pushup. They put quite a bit of pressure on your fingers, so you might want to start with only 10 or so. Do these everyday, building up to 20/day or more if you'd like.

It worked for me. Finger-tip pushups strengthen the finger and can prevent both painful and performance-altering jammed fingers.
