Question - Knee Injury (patella dislocation, ACL, MCL)

by Ty
(Louisiana)

My 16 year old son was injured during a high school football game last night. He dislocated the patella and blew out his ACL/MCL. The team Dr. put the patella back in place, performed a test(Probably a lachmans - Bart) to determine damage to ACL/MCL and then braced the leg. Basically, there was nothing left to keep his knee in place. Due to swelling, he will have an MRI done in a couple of days.

We are currently practicing RICE (20 minutes on 20 minutes off) The Dr. said he knows of the above mentioned injuries and the MRI will tell him the rest. We know he is looking at surgery, but are unsure of the healing/rehab time frame.

Any help?

6-9 Months

Out of the injuries that you described, the ACL tear is the most lengthy when it comes to rehab and returning to sports - After the MRI you will have a better idea of what exactly is injured. The patella dislocation and MCL can be treated conservatively, but the ACL tear will likely need to be reconstructed for a return to normal sports.

Time frames vary from different physicians, but a good range is 6-9 months - the first 4-6 weeks in supervised rehab, the rest spent working out on his own with follow-ups.
