Question - Knee Ligament Torn (Unhappy Triad)

by Laura
(calgary, canada)

I had an injury where i tore my meniscus, injured my ACL and tore my MCL. I would like to start playing rugby, but i don't know how long i should wait for it to recover? will it ever recover?

When i am running somewhere i can still fell a pop in the right side of my knee where my mcl is! and it still hurts sometime, but i want to get back into the game as quick as possible. I injured it in April, and i had to go to the hospital right away, they game me crutches and something like a knee cast but it went all the way down to my foot, but i could take it off and i had to have that for 2 weeks, almost three, and then i got this huge ankle brace, so i could move it, because before i could not, and he had to give me pills to take down the swelling because it was still huge, you couldn't even see my knee.

I had to wear the knee brace for 3 weeks and then i started walking on my own and getting physio which helped a lot, and i can run again, but my right side of the knee where the MCL is still is a little swollen, and i cant wait no longer to play, it is almost September and the league starts in 2 weeks help!!

Pain free first
by: Bart - SII

I would recommend waiting until you are pain free with walking, running, and all daily life activities before trying to get back to rugby. Also, I would recommend a gradual increase in activities - start running and cutting, light contact, etc and see how your knee reacts.

From a healing standpoint, you are probably out of the woods for the tissue being strong - the question is whether or not the ACL injury is going to lead to instability - it usually doesn't heal well and often needs surgical intervention.

Once you start increasing your activities, you will know how stable your knee is.
