Question - Knee (pain around patella)

I play soccer A LOT....of course I am right handed therefore my right leg is my strongest. I have had some knee pain this past year and it is steadily getting worse.

Sometimes I can hardly walk or when standing up from a seated position on the floor it pops and is painful. I cannot stretch it or I get sharp pains.

The pain is centrally on the lower and inside right region of my knee cap and behind my cap. It is not swollen and sometimes does not hurt.

**Always hurts going up but especially down stairs. I need help can you tell me what you think? I hope I provided enough information.

Oh I am a 32, Female 6' and 135 pounds.

Sounds like patella femoral syndrome
by: Bart - SII

From your description of your pain location and what increases your pain, it sounds like patella femoral syndrome.

Given your tall and slender frame, this is a fairly common problem. There is a lot of information on this site about patella femoral syndrome, what it is, what causes it, and some ideas on how to fix it. But the best way to go about dealing with it is to get in and see a good orthopedic physician and go through rehabilitation with a sports medicine clinician.

The popping that you describe could also be related to an inflammed medial plica. This can often be caused by PFS, and can be very painful, especially with stairs and with bending the knee while bearing weight.

Again, I would recommend talking with your doctor about the best treatment options. An MRI can sometimes show an inflammed plica, or inflammation around the patella femoral joint. Some type of rehabilitation before considering surgery is also a very good idea, as these types of things can often be fixed without surgery.

Hope this helps - comment back if you have other questions.
