Question - Leg Injury (shin pain with running)

by Gaurav
(Delhi, New Delhi, India)

I used to run 35-45 miles earlier, a few months back. Now, pain in my shins has restricted me to 15-17 miles in entire week only. Sometimes, it also pains around my knee. Can you please explain me, what could be the problem? Please guide me, how to get back on the track. I want to run in Delhi Half Marathon in second week of November'2008.

Thanks

Could be shin splints
by: Bart - SII

There are lots of different things that could be going on with your shin pain. The first thing that I would look at is whether you need to replace your shoes - how many miles do you have on your current pair? Or have you changed shoe styles recently - that can contribute to shin pain.

The other thing to look at is to make sure that you have good arch support - either from your shoes or with an orthotic insert.

Rest, ice, and lot of calf stretching should help with your pain. And if it continues for more than a couple weeks, a visit to the doctor for an X-ray is a good idea to make sure you don't have the starting of a stress fracture.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.
