Question - Lower Back (flexibility)

Hello there, I think this site is a terrific idea and you have tons of useful info. My question is this.

I have had a discectomy on my lower back for a herniated disk. I have done a lot of rehab work to strengthen my core since then. I am very active still playing competitive basketball and softball, fastpitch and slow pitch.

I keep getting these little popping sensations almost like when you twist and crack your own back or something. My question is, how can I keep myself limber and flexible in the lower back area because I do a lot of twisting and jumping and throwing so I want to stay injury free.

One surgery is enough for me, I'm only 31 and want to keep playing sports for as long as I can.

Thanks a lot and once again, great job on the site.

Sincerely,

Dean D.

Painful popping?
by: Bart - SII

Are the small poppings that you are getting in your back painful at all? Chances are you are simply getting normal movements of the facet joints - much like when you twist and your back pops. As long as they are not painful, I wouldn't worry too much about them.

As far as maintaining your flexibility, I am a big believer in the active hamstring stretch and the hip stretches listed on this site. Another great exercise is the sideways bending against the wall (bottom of page). These exercises should help maintain your mobility.

Hope this helps - comment back if you have other questions...and thanks for the kind words about the site!
