Question - Lunges (pain in front of hip)

by James
(Brantford,Ont Canada)

I have been doing lunges. I've noticed a feeling of a pinched nerve near the front of my hip bone where the quad meets the hip. What can I do to relieve the pain and start doing lunges again?

Start with stretching and watchig your form

The first thing you need to make sure you are doing is stretching your hip flexors and hamstrings before and after activity.

The second is to make sure your form with your lunges is correct. If lunges are giving you pain in the front of the hip, you may be leaning too far forward, causing your hip flexors to engage. This can often be due to weakness in the core, and so the hip flexors try to compensate for this to stabilize your pelvis. My page on Lunges gives some good guidelines - pay attention to the pictures and see how they all keep a very upright posture - chest high.

You can add some core stabilization activities to help with this compensation.
