Depends on what your goal is...
by: Bart - SII

I am by no means an expert with massage, however I do use it therapeutically quite often with my patients. Different goals will require different techniques...

What are you trying to achieve with the massage of a football player after a game? Is it to relieve muscle soreness or pain, or is it to prevent soreness?

Post work out massages can be effective in reducing tension in the muscles, and some will claim that it helps eliminate lactic acid buildup. This is usually achieved best with efflureage, which consists of long deep strokes along the muscle belly.

With any type of massage, it is important to gradually increase your pressure and work into the tissue slowly, especially if there is soreness.

If you want to know more specifics, try a google search on sports massage techniques - that might give you a little more specific information.
