Question - MCL/ACL/Meniscus Tear and Sports

by Lindsay
(USA)

I recently tore my MCL, ACL, and meniscus playing basketball. I had surgery which repaired my meniscus by putting a few stitches in it to heal. I also recieved a graft for my ACL.

My surgery was a little over a month ago. I am back to physical therapy and I am just being able to put weight on it.

Basketball season starts in about 6 months. Do you think that I will be able to play?

What would you recommend?

Everyone recovers from ACL/Meniscus repair differently, so it is hard to say when you will be ready to play basketball. It also depends on your doctor and what kind of time frame he uses for returning to sports.

Most of my patients are able to return to sports about 6 months after surgery - as long as they are diligent with their rehab and work hard. After going back, it takes another month or two to really feel like you are back to normal. None of the doctors that I work with will release patients until at least 5 months, most of the time it is 6.

So, there is probably a good chance that you could be back to basketball in 6 months, considering your surgery was a month ago. It will depend on how your rehab goes, how hard you work, and what your doctor thinks is appropriate. Just follow their advice and stick with the rehab.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.
