Question - my knee..(chronic patella dislocation)

Well last year i was playing soccer and i fell and dislocated my knee. i went to the hospital and they gave me a brace and crutches for 5 days. i couldnt bend my knee at all and it was HUGE! but then after i got my brace off and i was off crutches since then my knee always pops out of place and it gets swollen and i cant bend it for at least 5 days.

What can it be?

Then i went back to the doctor and they didn't even do the xray they just put a brace and crutches and recommended a surgeon for follow up. do i need surgery?

I played volleyball for about 2 months and my knee popped out at least 10 times. what can it be? they said i might have torn a ligament. can you please reply when you get this email. I'm going to the surgeon on friday 10/31/08.

Thanks,
Rafaela

It sounds like you have a chronic patellar dislocation. That means your kneecap is moving out of place and is unstable.

Your surgeon should be able to give you options for how to treat this. Surgery is likely the best option since the dislocations have happened so many times. They will likely talk about a procedure to either replace or tighten up the ligaments and tissues around your patella to keep it in place.
