Question - PF Syndrome (correcting lateral tilt)

by Ken

I read your article on 4 vs. 22. If the patella is tilted laterally, what hip exercises should be done in order to help bring the patella in medially?

lateral tilt

Exercises may not be terribly effective in correcting true lateral tilt - which is effect is an excessive tightness of the lateral retinaculum. Patellar mobilizations can help with this - moving the patella medially with your hands to stretch the lateral retinaculum - I have had success with this in some of my patients.

With that said, increasing the strength of the hip abductors and external rotators will place the femur in a better position and will lessen the impact of true lateral tilt.

I am working on getting a few hip exercise examples up on the site, as well as developing an e-book with a comprehensive exercise program for PFS focusing on the hips and core...that will hopefully be accomplished by November 1st - in the meantime, this post may give you a few ideas on types of exercises you can do to work on the hips.
