Question - Pinched Nerve?

by Shelly
(Albany, NY)

About 4-6 weeks ago, I fell hard onto my right knee while climbing over a baby gate. I am still unable to kneel on my knee or press on it without getting a sharp, shooting pain in the area touched and across on the other side of the knee.
I can touch one side of the knee cap and feel pain shoot to the other side. When pressed, the area burns like a scrap or rug burn and sharp pain shoots across the knee. I have no other symptoms; no difficulty walking or climbing, etc.
Will this correct itself on its own over time, or do I need intervention?
thank you
Shelly

contusion
by: Bart - SII

I have seen one or two patients with similar complaints - a hard fall directly on the front of the knee, and then burning type pain with touch and shooting pains around the area.

It turned out they had a contusion to the small nerve that runs across the front of the knee (the same one that is cut during a patellar tendon ACL reconstruction and results in a small area of sensory loss on the lateral side).

What helped with these patients was an injection into the area which helped calm the nerve and decrease the irritation.

It may very well improve on its own, but if it doesn't, get in to see your doctor to figure out exactly what is wrong and to get it taken care of.
