Question - Post-op Recovery time

by Kevin
(South Korea)

I was told by my doctor that I had to be on crutches for 3 weeks before I can walk on it at all. I live in South Korea and their recovery time philosophy seems to be different than back home in Canada. That seems awfully long compared to what I have been reading and researching. Should I try to use my knee without crutches ?

Scope recovery
by: Denise

I had a knee scope three weeks ago Monday. Today is my second day without crutches. I had a lateral release and meniscus tear which was repaired, not removed. The surgeon removed the plica, cleaned up the back of my knee cap as well as the little cysts that have developed around the edges of the meniscus.

For me, yes, it was three weeks. At two weeks I could put 25% of my body weight down on the bad leg as well as bend to 90 degrees. Today, 3 weeks and one day, I'm walking but doing my best not to limp. I can bend to 115 degrees and I'm currently working on a 2 inch step to gain some strength in my quads as well as riding a stationary bike. Two weeks is an incredibly long time in an immobilizer and just enough time to lose a lot of muscle mass and function.

I highly recommend seeing a therapist even if it's only once per week to get exercise instruction and some feedback. The basketball player on here that isn't ready for the season, you may have not worked properly on strength. That happens....I have a degree in athletic training and I still made the choice to see a therapist. They do what they do for a reason. Good luck to you all!!!
