Question - Rehab for quad strain

reference the info posted under quad injuries...

"To treat a quadriceps strain properly, and to prevent re-injury, you should have some type of rehabilitation. This is important to return normal flexibility, strength, and endurance, and to monitor scar formation."

What type rehab do you recommend? My right quad snapped Monday. Sharp pain on outside of leg above knee. When it snapped the whole area (about 2" above to 2" below right knee)felt tight for no reason...was just walking from one room to the other, had taken a few steps, it tightened, i paused, took 2 more steps and it snapped and the tightness released, but now pain.

Doctor said it wasn't the knee, but didn't offer advice past that. Probably because I have a hard time with rest part of rice. What exercises are still okay to do and what do you recommend for rehab? (my right leg has been working O.T. for past 2.5 years to compensate for left hamstring, so it is probably very annoyed with me.) I stretch a lot, so the tightness out of nowhere took me by surprise.

Trying to balance the extreme need for physical activity with the body's need to heal and my brain doesn't like the balance. Can you provide information on what activities would still be okay?

thanks for your time

At this point, rest is your best bet - along with ice and gentle stretching. With that said, activities that do not increase your pain should be alright. You might try an elliptical trainer, swimming, stationary bike, etc. And keep up with stretching of the leg, as long as it is relatively pain free.

Strengthening of the area should wait a week or so to let the tissues get a good start on healing, then a gradual introduction of things like body weight squats, lunges, etc.
