Question - Sore Knee (hiking)

by Carol

First time my grandson hiked with the boy scouts. They walked 15 miles. On the way back, his knee and the back of his knee started paining him so much, that he had to limp. He didn't fall or bump his knee only mountain climbing. I put alternate ice and heat, now its wrapped with an ace bandage.

1. What type of injury did he get or is this a sprain
2. Is it okay for him to take gym?

Impossible to tell exactly what kind of injury he has from just the description, but if this was the first hike he has done and they went 15 miles, it sounds like it could very well just be overuse. The back of the knee hurting is very likely, especially if he was going up and down a lot of hills or had unsure footing.

I would recommend ice and rest for the next day or two, and if it doesn't get better, get him in to see a doctor. Gym participation should be based on how he feels.
