Swelling indicates tissue irritation
by: Bart - SII

Swelling in the knee means that tissue, either inside or outside of the joint, is irritated or damaged. If it is inside the joint (the whole entire knee is swollen) then you likely have damage or irritation to the cruciate ligaments, the cartilage, articular surfaces, or joint capsule.

If the swelling is not the entire knee but more localized to one area, you could have a muscle strain, soft tissue irritation, contusion, etc.

If the swelling has been there for more than a few days, you should see your doctor to have it looked at.
