Question - Tendonitis? (anterior shin)

by Chris
(East Windsor, NJ)

I have been training for a 5 Mile race and have been doing a lot of running including sprint work and incline on the treadmill. After running a 5k my left calf was sore in the posterior and anterior. I have had sore posterior pain after running in these and it usually goes away.

I feel like i developed shin splints and tried to run but it hurt too much. I woke up the following day and when I life my toes up that tendon on the anterior part of my foot/ ankle hurt a lot. It was a little red not very swollen though. How long would you expect for me to not be able to run? I really appreciate the help,

love the website...

Thank you

Chris Miller

anterior pain

Was this pain immediately following one specific run? Did you do a lot of uphill running prior?

It sounds almost like muscle soreness - fairly significant, obviously, but soreness just the same. Inclines will wreak havoc on the anterior ankle because of the increased use of the muscles to pull the toes up as you go uphill.

If it is just soreness, it should subside in the next few days - ice and rest are a good idea. If it continues longer than that, you should see your doctor for an evaluation, and perhaps a biomechanical evaluation to make sure your foot/ankle are working efficiently.
