Question - Torn Meniscus (MCL detachment)

by Susan
(Florida)

If the meniscus is detached from the medial collateral ligament, can you repair it by therapy alone or is surgery necessary? If surgery is necessary, can it be done with local anesthetics?

Therapy and time should be enough
by: Bart - SII

The MCL has fibers that run into the joint capsule and the medial meniscus. Injury to the MCL has been shown to heal very well with conservative treatment - actually better than with surgical intervention. So with that said, therapy and proper management of the injury in the early tissue healing stages should be enough to allow for proper healing.

Should surgical intervention be necessary, it would be done arthroscopically, usually under general anesthesia.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.
