Randi's Meniscus Tear

by Randi
(Tulsa, OK)

I guess this starts with small ACL injury almost 12 years ago.

Fast forward to about a month ago. I was dancing and snap. I felt the injury, thinking that I just sprained my knee again.

Since I run and am pretty active I figured I just sprained the old injury again. Well the next day I woke up knee pretty sore and limping. I decided that I would probably need to take a week off from running or doing anything with high impact.

Well, needless to say as I was about to sit on the couch and pull my leg underneath me (bending my knee all the way), I felt an EXTREME pain in the form of popping.

I could not straighten and stand on it right a way. I had to almost force my leg straight with my hand. After which most of the high intensity pain went away but I had instant swelling.

Sorry trying to make a long story short...

Went to doctor got x-ray, nothing.

I thought that I might have torn my ACL until after getting the MRI back.
W
ell I have never heard of a meniscus tear. But evidently, that is exacting what I have. A complex tear of the posterior horn and mid body.... The medial meniscus has a radial tear with possible small partially detached fragment off..... Plus the lateral meniscus with a longitudinal tear....

Right now I still can't walk long or bend my knee without a sharp popping noise with extreme and intense pain!!!

I miss running and exercising!!

So right now I am just trying to figure it all out while waiting to see the orthopedist.

So any advice or other related info would be great to hear.

Just wondering what the next step is going to be.

Hang in there...

Randi,
Thanks for sharing your story. Having a knee injury can be a scary thing, with lots of questions. And not being able to exercise and do the things you want to do is very frustrating. It sounds like you are on the right track to get this taken care of. You have had an MRI, and thankfully your ACL is not torn. The tears in the meniscus will most likely need to be fixed surgically, but this is an easier surgery to recover from than an ACL reconstruction.

Your pain and loss of motion are most likely because of the little flap of meniscus that is detached or moving in the joint. This will cause the knee to lock up, and cause pain. After surgery, it should be much better.

Hang in there, and comment back here after you see your doctor to let us all know what is next. And make sure you read through all of the information on meniscus tears on the site. That may help answer some of your questions.
