Return to hockey after a broken ankle.

My 12 year old son broke his ankle in late July. He has been back in a regular shoe for about a week and a half. His ankle still seems very swollen and he can not balance on it for more than a few seconds. How soon can he expect before he can get back on the ice and what would you recommend for support when he can get into a skate?

The ankle looking swollen is normal - from the immobilization and the initial injury, there is swelling and scar tissue in the area - this can remain for many months or years but usually doesn't cause lots of problems.

He needs to be going through a comprehensive strength and balance program for his ankle in order to get back to hockey and not risk re-injury or new injury. The balance exercises are especially important. I would talk to your doctor about a referral for therapy, or check out Ankle Sprain Solutions which includes a comprehensive ankle strength, balance, and endurance program.

Once he does return, a lace up ankle brace would be a good idea.
