Returning to recreational ice skating after bimaleollar fracture

by Jenny

I broke and dislocated my left ankle, had surgery (ORIF) and was in a cast for about 7 weeks. I have been out and doing physical therapy now for two months. I have a plate on one side and two screws on the other. I swim almost every day and have excellent range of motion, though I do have residual soreness sometimes and swelling.

When would you recommend trying recreational ice skating? I have been working on a wobble board, stationary bike and eliptical machine as well.

Thanks for your input!

return to skating

Return to activities should be based on how the ankle feels and functions, first with normal daily life activities, then with more controlled exercise. If you are doing well on a wobble board, and feel like you have good strength, you could probably give "recreational" skating a try. Of course, you should make sure you are cleared by your doctor and therapist first.

Just make sure that you take it very slow at first. You may have some initial pain and soreness because of the new activity, and depending on your skates, the pressure may cause some pain around your ankle when laced tight.
