Right Ankle pain after Sprain

by Mike
(Texas)

I sprained my ankle a little over a week ago in a basketball game. I played in college and have many sprains in my history.

My question is that the swelling has gone down and the bruising around the ankle and toes is decreasing, but after I have the foot elevated or after sleeping when I put the foot down on the ground I have severe pain. The pain is from just below the calf to the toes and feels like the blood is rushing to the area. It last for about 1 minute to 2 minutes, but after I start walking on it the pain goes away. I feel my pain tolerance is high but this kills.

Thank you
Mike (TX)

Very common...

What you are experiencing is very common after an ankle sprain, and should continue to get better over the next few weeks.

Because of the injury to the area, and the previous swelling, the circulation to the ankle is somewhat decreased...this is part of the healing process. When you return your ankle to a "gravity dependent" position, you get an increase in circulation to the area, and that can cause severe pain for 20 seconds to a minute and a half.

Most of the time this goes away after the first 10-14 days, as your bodie's circulation returns to normal.
