Are you using an ice / comprression unit or just ice on its own? I have had patients who are sensitive to ice and it actually increases their pain - most of the time though this was with chronic overuse type injuries, not acute sugical patients.
If you knee was very very swollen and you were using an ice / compression unit, the compression could also be increasing your pain.
If it is the cold, I would suggest continuing with elevation, compression, and rest.

5 days past surgeryNEW by: rod
surgery went great, in at 7:00 home around 1:00. no pain due to the nerve block in surgery. woke up wednesday morning felt ok. about 10:00 nerve block wore off and the pain started. pain was moderate to severe but was managable with medicine. went to doctor friday afternoon and said everything looked great, swelling was not to bad, so took off bandages and cooling system on leg. was told to walk on leg as much as i could tolerate. knee felt fine so i didn't use my crutches on friday. friday night knee swelled up real bad. used polar tech(ice treatment from hospital) to try and control the swelling and pain. pain was uncontrollable all night(percocet didn't ease pain at all.) woke up saturday and took of ice treatment(for some reason pain seems to go away when ice not on it, i know it doesn't sound right but this is what is happening.) had horrible saturday afternoon and early evening. this when i put together icing it and increase in pain. iced all afternoon saturday up to 6:00pm. about to go to hospital when i take off ice treatment and knee starts feeling better in about 10 minutes. i know this doesn't sound right but this whats happening. saturday night was bearable(didn't use ice treatment from hospital all night) here i am on sunday morning and knee feels ok not to swollen(normal) just wondering if anyone has had an issue with icing making there knee hurt this bad( just to let any know i'm the type of person that can take pain, but friday and saturday was unbearable) by icing it. would greatly appreciate any response. thanks rod
