SLAP II repair & possible reinjury

(Austin, Texas)

Almost 3 weeks post-surgery (before starting formal physical therapy), I jerked my repaired shoulder up, back and around inadvertently - every direction I wasn't supposed to (reacting to a lunging dog), and aside from tremendous pain, felt something "funny"/"different" in the shoulder.

Ever since then, I feel like I've gone backwards in my progress, suffering more pain, less flexibility, etc. Is it possible that I dislodged the repair? I called the doctor's office and conveyed this story and heard back from the nurse, who said the doc would check it next week when he saw me. Trouble is, I'm not scheduled to see him for two more weeks.

I go to my firs=t physical therapy session today and plan to tell them the story too and see what they say. I just hate to think about having undone whatever was done.

Thoughts? Advice?

P.S. A few other minor repairs were done in addition to the SLAP II repair.

Injury after SLAP repair
by: Anonymous

Dealing with something similar. I'm 18 days post-op for SLAP TYPE II repair and bicep tendon repair. Day 10 post op I tripped stepping up onto a curb and jerked my shoulder while trying to stabalize myself. Been having more pain since then. Day 16 I had a little slip getting out of the tub. Not as much of a jerk or pain as the first incident, but now I am having more and more discomfort. Is it just irritated or did I undo the surgery? gosh, I can't imagine it being that delicate. I hope not!!! See my doctor in 2 days. The physical therapist seemed to think it was OK when I talked it over with him. He didn't recommend calling the doctor or anything. Any thoughts?

His shoulder, SLAP repair, which included 5 anchors, under its first test, which seemed minimal in a football game, completely came out, now its in worst shape ever! this was his 1st operation. 6 months ago! is this common? do i go back to the same doctor?

He will know miss his junior year of athletics.
