Tim's ACL Surgery

by Tim

Here's my story.... I am 25yo. Playing soccer about 6 weeks ago, had the ball at my feet with one defender on me, attempting to turn left and my right foot stuck into the ground, the top half of my leg tried to turn and snap!! Full tear of the ACL in my right knee. I blame my boots, they were a new pair that felt rather stiff with long heal studs, before the game and i remember telling my self "something isn't right with these". I wish i listened.
Had surgery 28th May. Hamstring graft. I was in hospital over night and out the next day, my OS said my knee was as good as he's seen, cartilage and meniscus wise. It was just a freak accident (my OS blames my boots too).
Am currently 2 weeks post OP and doing ok. Swelling has subsided. I was off crutches 6 days post and driving. Up and down stairs normally now at 12 days. Back to work @ 10 days. 90 degrees flextion but not quite full extension. I only took pain killers for 4 days post op. I haven't had much pain since then and have walked around on it a lot without ill-affects. It does feel a little stiff in the morning though. I start physio next week, can't wait, I just wanna play soccer again!!
Good luck to all those getting surgery and rehabbing,
keep at it people.

Injury Update
by: Tim

Hi All,
Am currently 8 weeks post op and life is relatively back to normal. I had full extension by 5 weeks and still not quite full flexion, my physio tells me it will come eventually. I still see the PT twice a week and do some rehab at home. I tend to have a bit of lateral collateral pain and am told this is because of my weak hamstring (graft site) but i'm not so sure.
My job involves me being on my feet a lot and after a 15hr day i tend to feel a bit of discomfort in the knee but it is bearable. Looking forward to having a run soon as my fitness levels have dropped a lot not to mention my self esteem too, but i guess half the rehab is mental and i'm determined to get back to where i was. Good Luck everyone, and a word of advice don't tear your ACL!

Update!
by: Tina S

Hey Tim,

Thanks for sharing your story, it is very similar to mine. I just recently ruptured my ACL 2 weeks ago and am waiting to meet my OS. Like you, I injured it during a soccer game and am eager to get back.

Just wondering how your recovery went. Back on the field yet? If so, do you feel 100%?
