I'm 15 years old and just had an ACL reconstruction a week ago with the hamstring graft on my left knee. I completely tore my ACL during practice with my varsity lacrosse team. I had the ball and ran full speed straight ahead toward the goal until I saw defense coming up. I made a quick turn to avoid them and then I heard a pop in my knee. I fell down on the turf with immense pain. With an injured knee, I sat out for the rest of practice. I tried to walk on it after awhile but my knee kept on buckling. After 2-3 days after the initial injury, my knee was stable although it was quite stiff. The stiffness went away after a few weeks, but I was never able to fully extend my knee. It always made a popping sound whenever I tried to extend it fully though it wasn't painful. I went to an orthopedist who diagnosed the problem as a completely ruptured ACL after looking at my MRI. She suggested surgery right off the bat due to my age and high activity level. I played basketball and lacrosse which are both competitive sports that require pivoting. I thought she had mistaken the diagnosis because my knee was feeling normal. She convinced me that she was positive of diagnosis though. She gave me two options for the surgery, the hamstring tendon or the patellar tendon. She suggested the hamstring because it was less pain post operative and less scar tissues. She told me that there wasn't a right or wrong choice since both of them balanced each other. She was skilled in both, after all she was the head orthopedist of a NFL team. She said that I will be able to gain back all my hamstring muscle in physical therapy, that there were no permanent loss. I had the surgery and so far everything's great. After the surgery, they stitched my lateral meniscus which was also damaged.(reason why I couldn't fully extend my leg)The first say after surgery was the worst though. My knee was in so much pain. I cried a little but then again I cry over things easily. But each day I felt a little better although there was a large numb spot that bothered me since my knee itched. I'm able to bend 100 degrees as of right now and fully extent my leg. My knee is still super swollen though and bruised but it's getting A LOT better. The only thing thats painful if when I'm standing up, the part under my knee feels heavy and its painful. I can walk a little though it's painful so I prefer crutches for a little longer. I'm starting PT in 4 days, can't wait. I'm in bed all day long so i decided to take my time and write this out, sorry for making itso detailed:p
