Torn allograft...now what?

by Amy
(Portland, OR)

I need to go to my doctor to confirm what I think is going to be a torn ACL. This will be my third total ACL tear if I am correct. My question is if I am not interested in another reconstruction is it safe/possible to leave a torn allograft in my knee or is better to at least have it removed?

Thanks,
Amy

Depends on your symptoms

Most of the time, a torn ACL, either the original or a new graft (allograft or autograft) causes some mechanical symptoms such as catching or locking of the knee. This is especially true if there is a complete tear and part of the graft tissue gets stuck within the knee joint.

If you are having problems regaining your motion, catching of the knee, or increases in swelling with weight bearing, an arthroscopy to clean everything up may be a good idea.

If you aren't having any problems, you might be able to get buy with just leaving it. I would discuss these things with your physician and get their take on the situation.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.
