torn knee cartilage and weight lifting

by Mary

How long after a cartilage tear in the knee, should you wait before resuming full weightlifting routine? I believe the tear was minor (dx'd by a physician) and advised I could resume as well as could be tolerated. I' wondering if I went back to my routine too soon as I am still having residual twinges of pain AFTER a workout (not during). I just want to make sure I am not doing more damage by trying to do too much.

Thanks

pain and swelling

There isn't a specific time line - it really depends on your pain and swelling - if these are minimal and you are able to go through normal daily activities, then a gradual return to weight lifting, as your doctor suggested, should be fine.

I would make sure you aren't trying to lift too much weight, and very gradually increase the intensity of your workouts - if things become painful or if you are having increases in swelling, you are likely doing too much. Minimal pain after your activity is to be expected, but should subside with time.
